Australian Presentation Sterling Silver Goblet, London 1875.
Description
This is a lovely example of an English Hallmarked Cup being used for an Australian Presentation by an Australian Jeweller and Silversmith, Angus and Coote of Sydney.
The elegant engraved cup is fully hallmarked for London, 1875 and then engraved on either side with the following inscriptions.
"To the member scoring the highest number of points in Club events during season 1906-7. Won by W.G. Paton"(Willie Paton)
"Rose Bay Amateur Swimming Club Presented by Angus & Coote Jewellers Sydney."
The cup was purchased from a member of the recipient's family, who told me that W.G. Paton was known affectionately as Willie. A photograph of Willie in a modern frame comes with the cup.
A sentimental piece of Sydney and Australian History.
